The Special Representative of UN Secretary-General in Haiti and Head of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Mariano Fernández Amunátegui, met on 1 May 2012 in Port-au-Prince with a high level delegation from Japan, led by the Director General of the International Peace Cooperation Headquarters, Koji HANEDA, in order to exchange views on the current situation in Haiti and MINUSTAH's efforts, as well as the work of the engineering Japanese contingent in the country. Headed by Japan’s Prime Minister, the International Peace Cooperation Headquarters oversees Japan's international peace cooperation providing military personnel and in-kind support for UN peacekeeping, international humanitarian relief operations, and international election observation missions.

Starting with Cambodia in 1992, Japan has been participating in UN peace operations around the world ever since. It currently contributes to 16 UN peacekeeping missions, including 226 military engineers in Haiti who are involved in rebuilding physical infrastructure following the 2010 earthquake.
