Organization Setting and Reporting Line

This position is located in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) in Port-au-Prince Construction Unit.  The Heavy Equipment Operator at this level reports to as the First Reporting Officer (FRO) and the Chief Unit as Second Reporting Officer (SRO).

The (NEO) position is required; to drive heavy duty trucks including car carriers, flat bed or low bed trailer trucks and heavy goods vehicles; loads and unloads such vehicles and delivers heavy equipment or goods to various locations. 

 

Responsibilities

Operates UN Heavy Vehicles in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life, including;

•Operates heavy and special vehicles to remote/hardship locations or team sites on a    roster basis;

•Drives long distances, deliver goods via a heavy truck, sometimes over intercity routes or different states;

•Operates plant equipment such as truck mounted and mobile cranes, graders, backhoes, loaders, rollers;

•Transports containers;

•Operates large trucks and vehicles when required in the transport of hazardous goods, such as bulk delivery of aviation fuel, diesel fuel, and gas cylinders to various locations within the mission’s area of operation;

•Delivers/collects accommodation units, containerized generator sets and other goods;

•Recovers vehicles at the team sites, and transport to a location for repair;

•Gets goods to client on time;

•Loads and unloads cargo;

•Records amount and type of cargo being delivered;

•Keeps a log of their activities;

•Finds and retains client’s information;

•Asks and gets signed receipt for the cargo delivered and takes orders for new deliveries;

•Takes rest periods during trip and special precautions while driving;

•Follows all applicable traffic laws;

•Reports to the Unit any incidents encountered on the road;

•Monitors roads conditions and watch for traffic congestion;

•Follows accident procedures if an accident occurs;

•Reports serious mechanical problems to the appropriate personnel;

•Keeps his truck, and associated equipment, clean and in good working order;

•Inspects his truck and trailer before and after the trip; and records any defects he finds;

•Fills up on fuel, cleans truck, washes windows and assists with routine daily check of vehicles;

•Performs other related duties as required;

Education:  The Equipment Operator may need to have a Certificate in technical education from a recognized and accredited institution. If not available, the Equipment Operator will need to provide a copy of his/her highest education degree/diploma obtained with employment certificate from or copy of contract with the last employer. The Equipment Operator must successfully pass the UN required Driving Test before he/she can be hired for this position.

Work Experience:   Work Experience: At least two (2) years of experience. The Truck Driver must have proficient knowledge in the following areas: local roads, truck and equipment safety, scheduling system and procedures, record keeping system, equipment cleaning standards and procedure, an understanding of the UN cultural environment.

Languages:  English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.  Fluency in French and Creole is required. Knowledge of English is highly desirable.
