Org. Setting and Reporting

The position is located in MINUSTAH/ Medical office. The nurse will report to the Head Nurse, Medical Services Division, and Medical Officer.

 

Responsibilities:

Within delegated authority, a nurse at this level will be responsible for the following duties:

Clinical duties

  • Responds to emergency calls and assists Medical Officers in providing adequate care; ensures effective liaison between patient and private doctor, paramedics, family members, and colleagues as appropriate; documents case findings.
  • Performs diagnostic and screening test such as ECG, X-rays, laboratory (blood and urine), and other tests as required.
  • Performs clinical assessment of patients visiting the walk-in clinic; provides care/advice accordingly or facilitates referral to the UN Medical Officer or to an outside physician, as indicated.
  • Ensures preparedness of staff travelling on missions or reassignments, including administration of appropriate vaccine, instructions on malaria prophylaxis and other travel- related ailments. Instructs on the content and potential uses of the travel kit.
  • Assists in providing health education and health promotion programs; participates in work environment assessment, e.g. office ergonomics, and addresses other occupational health issues.

 

Medico Administrative duties

  • Assists the Chief Medical Officer, Senior Medical Officers and Head Nurse in following United Nations established policies and procedures regarding medical clearances, medical emergencies, business continuity plans, crises management, SMT and medical preparedness in the absence of UN owned level III medical facility in the duty station to liaise with CEDIMAT and National medical facilities to ensure UN staff health care, job related injuries/ illnesses, and medico-legal issues. Evaluates, identifies and recommends purchase of medical supply, supports and assists the Chief Medical Officer in preparing Medical section budget, staff training plan and purchase of medical supplies/equipment. Refer staff to outside medical practitioners as required.
  • In a timely manner, prepares an accident report and fills out Headquarters forms to ensure proper submission of the claims to ABCC under Appendix D to staff rules.
  • Trains medical and other UN staff in cardio pulmonary resuscitation.
  • Ensures that medical instruments are properly sterilized.
  • Ensures proper filing of medical and other records.
  • Evaluates orders and maintains an efficient inventory and stock control of medications/ vaccines and other medical supplies and equipment.

 

Supervisory duties

  • Assumes all supervisory and medico-administrative duties of the Head Nurse in her absence. In the case of the Regional Commissions, acts as Head Nurse and supervises the work of other nurses if it is requested.

Education: University degree (BS or equivalent) in nursing. National registration and license are required.

Work Experience

A minimum of six (7) years of relevant work experience in nursing or related area.

 

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.  For the

position advertised, fluency in oral and written English and French is required. Knowledge of Spanish is an advantage.
