GENEVA (18 September 2013) - The new Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Haiti, Mr. Gustavo Gallón, will visit Haiti from 23 September to 1October  2013 to analyze the situation of human rights in the country.

"During this first visit, I will monitor the reality for the Haitian both in Port-au-Prince and outside of the capital and for that I will be traveling in at least one of the other departments," said Mr. Gallón.

"I also want to meet with Haitian authorities, the international community and civil society," he added. Mr. Gallon was appointed by the Council of Human Rights of the United Nations in June 2013.

During his mission the Independent Expert will meet with Haitian authorities, the Office du Protecteur des Citoyens, the diplomatic corps, representatives of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) and UN agencies, human rights defenders and civil society.

Mr. Gallon will present his report to the Human Rights Council in March 2014. *

The Independent Expert will hold a press conference on 1 October 2013 at 11 AM (time to be confirmed), in the conference room of the MINUSTAH logistics base, to present the preliminary findings of his visit.

The Human Rights Council appointed Mr. Gustavo Gallon as Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Haiti in June 2013. Mr. Gallon has over 30 years of experience as a human rights defender and University Professor of Public Law and Human Rights. He was the Special Representative of the United Nations Human Rights Commission for Equatorial Guinea from 1999 to 2002. He is currently the director of the Colombian Commission of Jurists since its establishment in 1988. GENEVE (18 septembre 2013) – Le nouveau Expert indépendant sur la situation des droits de l’homme en Haïti, Monsieur Gustavo Gallón, se rendra en Haïti du 23 septembre au 1 octobre 2013 afin d’analyser la situation des droits de l’homme dans le pays.

« Lors de cette première visite, j’aurais l’occasion de vérifier la réalité que vivent les haïtiennes et haïtiens aussi bien à Port au Prince qu’en dehors de la capitale et pour cela je me déplacerai dans au moins un des autres départements », a indiqué M. Gallón.

« Je tiens aussi à faire la connaissance des autorités haïtiennes ainsi que de la communauté internationale et de la société civile» a-t-il ajouté. M. Gallón a été nommé au poste par le Conseil des Droits de l’Homme de l’ONU en juin 2013.

Durant sa mission l’Expert indépendant rencontrera les autorités haïtiennes, la Protectrice du Citoyen, le corps diplomatique, les représentants de la Mission des Nations Unies pour la stabilisation en Haïti (MINUSTAH) et des agences de l'ONU, des défenseurs des droits de l’homme, et des organisations de la société civile.

M. Gallón présentera son rapport lors de la session du Conseil des droits de l’homme de mars 2014.*

L’Expert indépendant tiendra une conférence de presse le 1 octobre 2013 à 11h AM (heure à confirmer), dans la salle de conférence de la base logistique de la MINUSTAH,  afin de présenter les observations préliminaires de sa visite.
