The Paraguayan military engineering contingent of MINUSTAH are currently erecting a prefabricated building to accommodate the maternity ward of Jacmel's St. Michel Hospital. This temporary building should enable the Departmental hospital to function as normal during major development work of the institution...

"This infrastructure will bring a great improvement to the care of pregnant women, and contribute to better working conditions for medical staff," reflects Dr. Edmonde Jean Baptiste Lafalaise, a doctor attached to the maternity ward.

Up to now, the maternity wing of the hospital, with its 19 beds, was housed in a building damaged during the earthquake of January 12^th 2010. The vibrations produced by the work carried out a few meters from the maternity wing are felt inside this dilapidated structure.

“Currently, we are in a room without adequate ventilation. Given the amount of patients and the nursing staff, the establishment of a space designed specifically for maternity during the period of construction of the hospital will make our work more effective” explains Dr. Lafalaise.

The new prefabricated building will include a treatment room, a delivery and pre-delivery room, a dormitory and an office for medical staff.

For Newton Jeudi, Director General of the hospital, the transfer of the maternity wing to the prefabricated building will allow for "the better provision of care to mothers trying to give birth, particularly if there are complications."

Several enterprises are sharing the work of renovation and development of the St. Michel Hospital. Apart from the provision of the temporary maternity wing, MINUSTAH has already provided three prefabricated structures to house the hospital's administrative staff. The new space housing the maternity wing will be ready in a couple of weeks.

La compagnie de génie militaire paraguayenne de la MINUSTAH construit actuellement un préfabriqué devant loger la maternité de l’hôpital St Michel de Jacmel. Cet immeuble provisoire doit permettre de maintenir l’hôpital départemental en fonction pendant d’importants travaux d’aménagement de l’établissement.

« Cette infrastructure apportera une grande amélioration dans la prise en charge des femmes enceintes et contribuera à de meilleures conditions de travail du personnel médical », témoigne Dr Edmonde  Jean Baptiste Lafalaise, médecin attaché à la maternité.

Jusqu’à présent, la maternité de l’hôpital, disposant de 19 lits, était logée dans un bâtiment endommagé lors du séisme du 12 janvier 2010. Les vibrations produites par les travaux réalisés à quelques mètres de la maternité se font ressentir à l’intérieur du bâtiment vétuste.

« Actuellement nous sommes dans une chambre sans ventilation suffisante. Compte tenu  de la quantité des malades et du personnel infirmier, mettre en place un espace destiné à la maternité durant la période de construction de l’hôpital rendra notre travail plus efficace », poursuit Dr Lafalaise.

Le préfabriqué comprend une salle de soins, d’accouchement et de pré-accouchement, un dortoir et un bureau pour le personnel médical.

Pour Newton Jeudi, directeur général de l’hôpital, le déplacement de la maternité vers le préfabriqué  permettra d’« offrir de meilleurs soins aux mères en train d’accoucher, notamment s’il y a des complications ».

Plusieurs compagnies se partageant les travaux de rénovation et d’aménagement de l’hôpital St Michel. Pour sa part, le contingent de Casques bleus va construire deux autres préfabriqués d'ici à la fin du mois de mars, le premier pour loger le personnel administratif et le second pour accueillir la cafeteria de l’hôpital.
