In Bois Pin, a town in the area of the Lascahobas commune in the Plateau Central (Central Plateau), a new system of collection and distribution of drinking water terminates the plight of the inhabitants of this hilly region...

"Here it was hell" recalls Nahomie Pierre, a young resident of Bois Pin... Before the construction of the water supply system in the village, Ms Pierre had to "take to the roads at three o' clock in the morning, to bring water back to the house in time to send children to school", she says.

Inaugurated on October 30th, the new project has helped create three fountains', and to supply five other sources previously built in neighboring towns, as well as create 2,000 linear meters of piping to bring the precious liquid to the community.

With the installation of this new water supply system, Bois Pin accesses – for the first time ever – drinking water. Adamant that they will never return to using spring water (often contaminated by the feces of domestic animals and humans), some villagers have volunteered to form a Management Committee to sustain the good working of the new system.

"I came to an agreement with the company charged with the project's execution to acquire a basic knowledge of plumbing, allowing me to work on the network in case of primary failure," says Michelet, a member of the Management Committee. This father of five has great expectations of the new system for the welfare of his family.

For the mayor of the town, Dunoix Rateau, "a fresh wind is blowing in the area, since the installation of the new fountains."

The project is part of 109 Quick Impact Projects carried out in the Plateau Central by MINUSTAH since the Mission's deployment in Haiti in 2004.

Built by a local company, the new system is an initiative of two local organizations – namely, Coordination pour des actions en santé et en développement d’Haïti (COSADH – Coordination of actions in health and development of Haiti, in English) and the Association des planteurs pour le développement agricole de Juampas Bois Pin (APDAJUB – Growers Association for Agricultural Development Juampas Bois Pin).

The project was funded by MINUSTAH to the tune of U.S. $65,000.

A Bois-Pin, une localité située dans la section communale de Lascahobas, dans le Plateau central, un nouveau système de captage et de distribution de l’eau potable met fin au calvaire des habitants de cette région au relief accidenté.

 « Ici c’était l’enfer », se souvient Nahomie Pierre, jeune habitante de Bois Pin. Avant la construction du système d’adduction dans son village, elle devait « emprunter la route de l’eau à trois heures du matin pour pouvoir ramener l’eau à la maison, afin d’envoyer les enfants  à l’école à temps », raconte-t-elle. 

Avec l’installation du nouveau système d’adduction d’eau, Bois Pin accède pour la première fois à l’eau potable. Pour ne plus revenir à l’usage de l’eau de source souvent polluée par des excréments d’animaux domestiques et d’humains, certains villageois se sont portés volontaires pour constituer le comité de gestion du système d’eau, afin de pérenniser son existence.

« Je me suis entendu avec la firme d’exécution du projet pour acquérir des connaissances de base en plomberie, me permettant d’intervenir sur le réseau, en cas de panne primaire », indique Michelet, un des membres du comité de gestion. Ce père de cinq enfants attend beaucoup du nouveau système, pour le bien-être de toute sa famille.

Pour le maire de la commune, Dunoix Rateau, « un vent nouveau souffle dans la zone, depuis l’installation de ces nouvelles fontaines ».

Ce projet fait partie de 109 Projets à effet rapide réalisés par la MINUSTAH dans le Plateau Central depuis son déploiement en Haïti en 2004.
