After eight months of work, the road from Port-de-Paix to Jean-Rabel (in the extreme northwest of the country) has been totally renovated. It was officially inaugurated on September 3rd.

47km long, the road - located in the poorest department of the country, but also in one of the most remote areas - was in very poor condition, limiting access, as well as the movement of 150,000 inhabitants in the area.

From four-hours travel time between Jean-Rabel and Port-de-Paix (the main town of the department) before work started, the journey has been decreased to just two-hours.

During heavy rains, the road was often flooded and impassable - isolating inhabitants from the rest of the region and the country as a whole. Thanks to the works, which consisted of smoothening, strengthening and enhancing the road, it is now possible to travel on it even during torrential rain. In addition, drainage channels were also cleaned and repaired.

The work was carried out by a contingent of Indonesian engineers from MINUSTAH (INDOENGCOY).

The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Regional Director of the Department of Public Works, Transport and Communications, the Mayor of Port-de-Paix, the Director of Support Services at MINUSTAH and the Commander of the Indonesian contingent of the UN mission.

Après  huit mois de travaux, la route reliant Port de Paix à Jean Rabel (Nord-ouest), a été totalement rénovée et officiellement inaugurée ce 3 septembre dernier.

Longue de 47 km, cette route située dans le département le plus pauvre du pays, mais aussi l’un des plus enclavés, était en mauvais état, limitant les conditions d’accès et de déplacement des 150 000 habitants de la zone.

De 4 heures avant les travaux, le temps de trajet entre Jean Rabel et le chef-lieu du département est passé à 2 heures.

Lors de fortes pluies, la route était souvent inondée et impraticable, isolant ainsi une grande partie des habitants du reste de la région, et du pays. Grâce à ces travaux, qui ont consisté à aplanir, renforcer et rehausser la route, celle-ci reste praticable même en temps de pluie. Les canaux d’évacuation des eaux ont aussi étés nettoyés ou réparés.

Les travaux sont l’œuvre d’un contingent de sapeurs indonésiens de la MINUSTAH (INDOENGCOY).

La cérémonie d’inauguration a vu la participation du Directeur régional du ministère des travaux publics, transports et communications, du Maire de Port de Paix, du Directeur des services d’appui à la MINUSTAH, ainsi que du Commandant du contingent indonésien de la mission onusienne.
